What average donation value measures and why it matters
Average donation value (ADV) is total donation revenue divided by the number of completed donations in a given period or campaign. It tells you how much each individual donor contributes on average, which is a different signal than total revenue. Two campaigns can raise the same amount of money with dramatically different donor counts — and understanding that difference shapes how you write appeals, set suggested gift amounts, and prioritize audience segments.
For content teams, ADV is the bridge between engagement metrics and financial impact. A high-reach campaign that attracts a large number of very small gifts may look successful by impression count but underperform in cost-per-dollar-raised. Conversely, a tightly targeted campaign reaching a smaller, higher-affinity audience can produce a higher ADV that more than compensates for lower volume. Tracking ADV by campaign, by traffic source, and by content type lets you understand which messages attract high-value donors versus broad but shallow interest.
ADV also anchors the suggested-gift anchoring decisions on your donation pages. If you know your current ADV, you can set a default donation amount just above it to nudge donors upward without alienating your median supporter.
Formula
Average Donation Value = Total Donation Revenue / Number of Donations
How to use this calculator
Enter the total revenue generated by a campaign — or by a specific content channel, email sequence, or landing page — alongside the total number of completed donations from that same source. The result is the ADV for that segment. Running this calculation per campaign rather than only across your entire donor file gives you the most useful signal.
To get the most value, calculate ADV separately for each distinct traffic source or content type: organic social, paid social, email, and direct traffic. If your Instagram campaign drives a noticeably lower ADV than your email campaign, that tells you something about audience intent, not just reach. It may mean social donors need a lower barrier to entry, or that your social copy is attracting first-time micro-donors who need a follow-up nurture sequence before they give at full value.
Segment by campaign theme as well. Emergency or urgent appeals often generate higher ADVs from existing donors but may suppress ADV from new audiences who do not yet have established giving patterns. Evergreen content — donor spotlights, impact stories, program updates — tends to attract more deliberate giving.
How to improve average donation value through content
Suggested-gift anchoring is the most direct content lever for ADV. Donation pages that display three or four predefined amounts perform differently depending on where the defaults are set relative to current ADV. Naming a specific impact at each giving level — "$25 provides school supplies for one child for a month" — makes the ask feel concrete rather than arbitrary, which tends to push donors toward the middle or upper tier rather than the lowest option.
Long-form impact content correlates with higher ADVs for major donors, who typically need more context before giving a significant gift. Video case studies, detailed annual reports, and program-specific landing pages give those donors the information they need to justify a larger commitment. Short-form emotional content, on the other hand, is better at activating impulse donations at lower amounts — useful for new donor acquisition but less so for ADV optimization.
Recurring donor programs are another path to ADV improvement. Monthly donors frequently give less per transaction but more per year. If you calculate ADV on an annual basis — total annual revenue from a donor divided by 12 monthly transactions — you will often see that recurring donors produce a higher effective monthly ADV than one-time givers.
- Set suggested gift amounts at 25%, 100%, and 200% above your current ADV so the middle option nudges the average upward
- Use specific impact statements at each giving level to make the amount feel purposeful
- Segment ADV by audience age, acquisition source, and campaign type to identify your highest-value donor profiles
- Test a "most popular" label on your middle donation tier to normalize giving at that level
- Build a follow-up email sequence for first-time donors that moves them toward a recurring plan
Common mistakes when tracking average donation value
The most frequent mistake is blending all campaigns into a single ADV figure and reporting it as a stable organizational number. ADV varies significantly by campaign type, season, audience, and urgency level. Treating a blended ADV as a benchmark makes it harder to identify which campaigns are pulling the number up or down.
Another mistake is comparing ADV across campaigns with very different donor counts without acknowledging statistical volatility. A campaign that produced only twelve donations may show a very high ADV simply because one large donor happened to give through that channel. Small sample sizes inflate or suppress ADV in ways that do not reflect actual content performance.
Finally, many teams track ADV only at the end of a campaign. Monitoring ADV in real time during a campaign — especially a multi-day or multi-email campaign — lets you make adjustments to suggested amounts, urgency copy, or targeting while the campaign is still active.
